The Charlestown Town Council established a new five (5) member citizen based committee for the sole purpose of constructing, operating and maintaining a new recreational facility for dogs and their owners at Ninigret Park, in accordance with the recently adopted Master Plan for the park. This sub-committee to the town’s Park and Recreation Commission was appointed in October of 2009.
The establishment of the permanent Dog Park Committee came as a recommendation of an earlier Ad-Hoc Study Committee that performed a feasibility study for introducing a Dog Park at Ninigret as another recreational venue in the multi-purpose regional park. The detailed study found that there was a strong public interest in having a dog park available for the many dog owners in the town and general region of the park.
All residents and non-residents of Charlestown who are interested in volunteering to be a member of the CCC support group are invited to fill-out application forms that are available below or at the office of the Parks and Recreation Department at Town Hall (Telephone 364-1222).
Members of the Canine Club will assist the Dog Park Committee in planning and building the Dog Park, in raising public donations needed to pay for the materials and equipment to construct and operate the dog runs and, once in operation, to periodically assist in managing and maintaining the facility. There is no limit to the number of CCC members allowed, all of whom will be official town volunteers. http://www.charlestowncanineclub.com/
In the spirit of how Ninigret Park has been improved to date and - given the current emphasis of maintaining modest town budgets and low property taxes - the Dog Park Committee plans to conduct a public donation program and to promote fund raising efforts to pay for the costs for the fencing and other improvements to operate an effective and attractive Dog Park Facility.
The initial capital budget to pay for the required materials has been set for $25,000 – most of which to be used for purchase of the fencing of the one-acre large dog run and one-half acre small dog run.
Tax deductable donations payable to the Town of Charlestown may be mailed to the Parks and Recreation Department, 4540 South County Trail, Charlestown, RI 02813. Be sure to note that your donation is for the Dog Park. The town will officially acknowledge all gifts received.
